LX49+

The Impact line of DAW controllers are designed to receive power via USB. The exception being the LX88/LX88+ which also has the option of being powered by a 9v power supply.

Even in the case of the LX88/LX88+ a typical setup involves connecting Impact directly to a USB port on your computer using the supplied cable. This connection powers the device and sends data to and from your computer. With that said, we have encountered some cases where the USB ports that are built into computers don't provide consistent power to bus powered devices and in some case don't even follow USB power spec. These USB power problems can lead to a number of strange behaviors such as:

 

  • Device is recognized by the computer but not the host application (Reason, Cubase, Logic, Bitwig Studio and other applications compatible with USB MIDI devices).
  • Loss of communication with host application (keys stop working, display updates when moving controls but software does not respond).
  • Performance that deteriorates over a period of a few minutes or hours.
  • Parameter values changing when controls are not being moved.

Solutions

We have found that in many cases, simply trying a different USB cable or USB port will help.

In other cases, we recommend connecting Impact through a powered USB hub (particularly when using a laptop). To be clear, Impact will not work with a standard passive USB hub, only USB hubs which provide their own external power supply are recommended.

Cubase and Nuendo offer convenient features which allow for dynamic parameter assignments for generic MIDI Controllers.

Track Quick Controls are a set of 8 parameters which can be assigned on a track by track basis, to any effect or instrument plug-in associated with a track, or even the built in channel strip effects.

Since Impact's Preset mode acts like a generic MIDI controller, independent of the Mixer and Instrument Modes, you can setup the controls in Preset mode to access Quick Controls.

To make things easier, we exported the necessary settings as an .xml file, which you can find here:

Instructions

  1. With your Impact LX or LX+ controller connected to your computer and powered on, start Cubase or Nuendo.
  2. Create a new project or open an existing one.
  3. Open the 'Studio' menu ('Device' menu in Cubase 9 and earlier).
  4. Select 'Studio Setup' ('Device Setup' in Cubase 9 and earlier).
  5. On the left side of the window, select 'Track Quick Controls'.
  6. In this menu, set the 'MIDI Input' to 'Impact LX**' (Windows), or 'Impact LX** MIDI 1' (OS X).
    (Note: 'Impact LX** Port 1' for original LX on OS X).
  7. Click the 'Import' button, then navigate to the directory where you downloaded the 'ImpactLX_QC_Setup.xml' file (from the link above), select the file and then click 'Open'.
  8. Check the 'Pick-up Mode' option (this enables soft-takeover).
  9. Click 'Apply'.
  10. Click 'OK'.

Now when your Impact LX keyboard is in Preset Mode and Preset 1 is selected, you'll have access to the 8 Quick Controls for the currently selected track. If you change tracks the parameter assignments will be updated according to the Quick Controls on the new track.

This is very useful as it allows for mapping insert and channel strip effects which aren't normally accessible from Impact. You can find information about making Quick Control assignments on pg. 648 of the Cubase Operation Manual (located in the 'Help' menu).

Impact LX and LX+ controllers can be used as a simple control surface in Tracktion with some basic configuration.

Installation & Setup

To get started, please download the Tracktion Control Surface Script file from the link below.

  1. Connect your Impact LX controller to your computer.
  2. Start Waveform/Tracktion.
  3. Open the 'Settings' tab.
  4. Select the 'MIDI Devices' menu.
  5. Enable both of Impact's MIDI inputs (in Windows they are called 'Impact LX**' and 'MIDIIN2 (Impact LX**)', in OS X they are called 'Impact LX** MIDI1' and 'Impact LX** MIDI2'). See Image 1 (Windows) and Image 2 (OS X).
  6. Go to the 'Control Surfaces' menu.
  7. Click the 'Create new custom control surface...' button.
  8. Click the 'Import settings...' button.
  9. Find the 'Impact_LX.trkctrlr' file, which is in the .zip linked above.
  10. Click 'Open'.
  11. Set the Input Device to 'MIDIIN2 (Impact LX**)' in Windows (Image 3) or 'Impact LX** MIDI2' in OS X (Image 4).
  12. Set 'Parameters' to 32.

Note: '**' represents 25, 49, 61 or 88; depending on which Impact series controller you are using.

Now make sure that the USB Port Setup mode for the Impact LX controller is set to 2. Please follow these steps:

 

  1. Hold 'Shift/Mute' and press 'Patch > (Setup)'. The display will say 'S.E.t.'.
  2. Press key 'A2' (this is the 13th white key from the left on 25, 49 and 61 key controllers, 22nd white key on 88 key controllers).
  3. Press key 'C3' (labeled with a '-') until the display says 0.0.2. (on the LX25+, press 'C3' (Enter) then press 'C1' (-) until the display says '0.0.2.').
  4. Hold 'Shift/Mute' and press 'Patch > (Setup)' to exit Setup mode.

Many of the most common issues which users encounter can be resolved by restoring the default settings for your controller.

Factory restore procedure for Impact series controllers
For the LX25+, LX49+ and LX61+:

  1. Turn the Impact off.
  2. Hold both Octave buttons while turning the Impact back on.
  3. The display will show the firmware version number, followed by 8.8.8. and then it will return to normal operation.
  4. Release the Octave buttons.

For the LX88+:

  1. Turn the Impact off.
  2. Hold the 'Split' and 'Layer' buttons while turning the Impact back on.
  3. The display will show the firmware version number, followed by 8.8.8. and then it will return to normal operation.
  4. Release the 'Split' and 'Layer' buttons.

For GX series and SE49:

  1. Turn the Impact off.
  2. Hold both Octave buttons while turning the Impact back on.
  3. The LEDs will light in a cycle and then return to normal operation.
  4. Release the Octave buttons.

If your Impact LX+ stops communicating with your computer and music software during use, most likely it's caused by a USB Power issue, as described on this page: USB Power and Impact
Here is a list of potential solutions:

  • Connect the LX+ to a different USB port.
  • Try a different USB cable (start with the included cable if you are not already using it)
  • Connect the LX+ using a powered USB hub. Do not use a passive USB hub (a hub which does not have it's own power supply) or a hub which is built into a display.
  • Start the LX+ in low power mode. You can either, hold the 'Loop' and 'Record' buttons while turning the unit on (this is temporary, low power mode will be deactivated the next time you turn the LX+ off and on again) or by following these steps:
    1. Hold Shift and press Patch> (Setup). The display will say 'S.E.t.'
    2. Press key G#2 (labeled 'Low Pwr Mode'). The display will say 'O.F.F.'
    3. Press key C3 (labeled '-'). The display will say '.O.n.' and the LEDs for the pads will turn off.
    4. Hold Shift and press Patch> (Setup) to exit Setup mode.

If some functions of your controller are working correctly but others are not, please refer to the DAW specific Setup and Troubleshooting guides on this page: Impact Support

If you find that the LX+ has become unresponsive, check if the display will update when you move a control (knobs, faders, Pitch/Mod Wheel). Also try tapping a pad and check if the Pad LED changes color when pressed.

If the display doesn't update to show the current value for the control you moved or if the pad LEDs don't change color as you tap them, please contact our support staff.

If you are just getting started with you Impact GX, LX+ or SE49, follow these steps to activate your Bitwig 8-Track license.

  1. Create and activate your account at: Bitwig.com/register.
  2. Add your Bitwig 8-Track serial number to your user account.
    • The serial number will be printed on the flier that came with your Nektar controller.
  3. Download Bitwig 8-Track from your user account.
  4. Install Bitwig 8-Track, start the application and follow the on-screen instructions.

Setup

The files necessary for using Impact controllers with Bigwig are included with the latest versions of Bitwig Studio and Bitwig 8-Track. Nektar's Bitwig integration is known to work in the latest versions of Windows, OS X and Ubuntu.

  1. Plug in your Impact and make sure it’s switched on (if you didn’t do so already).
  2. Launch Bitwig Studio. Your Nektar controller should be detected automatically.
  3. Go to Files > Settings > Controllers to confirm that your Nektar controller is listed.
  4. Check the ports match that of images 1 (OS X) or 2 (Windows).
  5. If your controller is not automatically detected press the 'Add controller manually' button, choose your Impact model and ensure the ports are set up correctly as in images 1 (OS X) or 2 (Windows).
  6. Click 'OK' and exit Device Setup.

That’s it, setup is now complete and you can move on to the fun part, learning how it all works! Please refer to the user guide for further information on that front.

Troubleshooting

If Impact isn't detected automatically, try adding the controller manually. The controller's ports should be configured as shown in images 1 and 2.

If you don't see your Impact controller listed under 'Nektar' when you click the 'Add Controller Manually' button, make sure that you have installed the latest version of Bitwig Studio or Bitwig 8-Track.

If you have deleted an Impact controller in the past and are trying to set it up again, it will not be added automatically. You will need to click the Add button as shown in image 3.

If you see an error which looks like the one shown in image 4, it means you have an older version of of our Bitwig integration installed. Since the most current support files are now included with Bitwig, you can simply uninstall the old files. You will find uninstallers in the following locations:

Windows: C:\Program Files\Nektar\Bitwig

OSX: //Applications/Nektar/Bitwig

Once you have run the uninstallers to remove the old support files, open the Settings menu in Bitwig, select the 'Controllers' page and check that your controller has been detected. If not, set it up manually.

Patch Changes
If you find that the [< Patch] and [Patch >] buttons don't work when controlling a third-party plug-in, it's likely because the plug-in uses it's own patch browser. The Patch buttons on the Impact series control the patch navigation functions of the DAW, so you may need to save the plug-ins presets in your DAWs patch format, before you can use the Patch buttons on the Impact controller for patch navigation. You can find more information about saving patches in your DAW, in the documentation for that program.

Here are the steps you need to follow to get Cubase up and running with your Impact Controller. Impact Steinberg integration is compatible with Cubase 5 and up, as well as Nuendo 6 and up.

 

  1. Download the 'Impact_Steinberg_Integration' file from your Account page after registering your product.
  2. Run the 'Impact_Steinberg_Support' installer and follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. Plug in your Impact and make sure it’s switched on (if you didn’t do so already).
  4. Launch Cubase.
  5. In Cubase 10 or above, open the 'Studio' menu.
  6. Select 'Studio Setup…'.
  7. Select 'MIDI Port Setup'.
    Note: In Cubase 9 or below the menu path is Devices > Device Setup… > MIDI Port Setup.
  8. Un-tick the second Impact port in the “In ‘All MIDI’” column. The second port is named 'Impact LX** MIDI 2' in OS X (Image 1) and 'MIDIIN2 (Impact LX**)' (Image 3) in Windows
  9. Next check that Impact appears in the Remote Devices list (Image 2 and Image 4)
  10. Click 'OK' and exit Device Setup.

Troubleshooting

Automatic Track Selection
By default, when you move a control which is associated with a specific track, that track will become selected. If you want to disable this behavior, uncheck the 'Enable Auto Select' option as shown in the images 2 and 4.

Smart Switch Delay
The Smart Switch Delay setting changes the behavior of switch/button controls depending on how long the button is held. When set to anything other than 'Off' it may appear that some button functions are unresponsive, when the button is held for too long.

Duplicate Track/Channel Names
Check your project for tracks and Mixer channels with the same name and rename any duplicate tracks. If Impact encounters two tracks or mixer channels with the same name, the track selection can get out of sync with what you see in Cubase.

Fader 9 controls only a small range of the Master Volume
In projects created with Cubase 9.0.30, if you move the 9th fader while holding the button below that fader, you will only be able to control the Master Volume parameter over a small range. This issue was fixed in Cubase 9.5 but the issue will still occur when you open a project that was made in Cubase 9.0.30. Projects made in newer versions of Cubase will not exhibit this problem.

Track select issues with Impact in Cubase 8 and above
In Cubase 8 and above, Input channels can be controlled from Impact's Mixer Mode, where they could not be controlled in earlier versions of Cubase. This can result in unpredictable track selection when using the [< Track] and [Track >] functions. To fix this problem, simply hide Input channels in the MixConsole as shown in the image to the right.

  4. Launch Digital Performer and create a Project or open an existing one.
  5. Go to the 'Setup' menu.
  6. Select 'Control Surface Setup...'
  7. Click the '+' button in the upper right corner.
  8. For 'Driver' select 'Nektar Impact'.
  9. For 'Unit' select 'Multi MIDI'.
  10. For 'MIDI Input', select 'MIDIIN2 (ImpactLX**)-16' in Windows or 'ImpactLX** MIDI2-16' in OS X.
  11. For 'MIDI Output', select 'ImpactLX**' in Windows or 'ImpactLX** MIDI1' in OS X.
  12. Click 'OK' to close the Control Surface Setup window.

Important: Impact integration for Garageband is compatible with GarageBand 6.0.5 and above.

These instructions assume you have GarageBand installed and are running Mac OS X.

  1. Make sure GarageBand is already installed on your computer. If not, please install the latest version of GarageBand first and open it at least once, before running the installer for Nektar DAW integration software.
  2. Download the 'Impact_Apple_Integration' file from your Account page after registering your product.
  3. Run the 'Impact_Apple_Support' installer and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Plug-in your Impact keyboard and make sure it’s switched on (if you didn’t do so already).
  5. Launch GarageBand.

That’s it, setup is now complete.

Troubleshooting

Mixer Mode:
Mixer Mode is fully functional in Garageband 6.0.5 and Garageband 10.

Instrument Mode:
Instrument mode mapping only works in Garageband 6.0.5, not supported in Garageband 10.
Instrument parameters can be controlled from Smart Controls in Mixer mode in Garageband 10.

Transport controls:
All transport functions except for Undo and Click work in Garageband 6.0.5 and Garageband 10. The Click function only works in Garageband .10

If you encounter a problem where some controls do not work as expected, specifically related to button functions, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Close any applications you have open.
  2. Open a Finder window.
  3. Open the 'Go' menu at the top of the screen.
  4. Select 'Go to folder...'.
  5. Type '~/Library/Containers'.
  6. Click 'Go'.
  7. Open the 'GarageBand' folder or 'com.apple.garageband10' folder if you are using an older version.
  8. Open the 'Data' folder.
  9. Open the 'Library' folder.
  10. Open the 'Preferences' folder.
  11. Find com.apple.garageband10.cs and move it to the trash.
  12. Start GarageBand again.

Here are the steps you need to go through to get Logic Pro X up and running with your Impact LX+

Setup Instructions for Logic 10.6 and later

  1. Download the 'Impact_LX+_Logic_10.6_or higher_support...' file from your Account page after registering your product. If you selected Logic as your DAW, you’ll find the link below your product registration.
  2. A dialog box will appear stating "This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed". Click "Continue".
  3. If a second message appears, informing that an older version of Nektar DAW integration for logic was found, click here for instructions. Otherwise continue following the installer prompts until complete.
  4. Plug in your Impact LX+ and make sure it's switched on.
  5. Launch Logic.
  6. In Logic, a dialog box will appear asking 'Do you want to automatically assign the controls of the Nektar "Impact LX+"?' (see image)
  7. Click "Auto Assign".
  8. The Control Surface window will appear showing the Impact LX+ icon. Close the window.

That's it, setup is now complete.

Troubleshooting with Logic 10.6 and later

If you do not see the message detailed in step 6, or if the Nektar DAW integration is not working following, complete these steps:

  • Open the ‘Logic Pro’ menu at the top left part of your screen and select ‘Control Surfaces/Preferences’.
  • In the window that appears, select the ‘MIDI Controllers’ tab. (see image)
  • Check the box in the ‘Auto’ column for your Impact LX+ controller.

Setup instructions for Logic 10.5 and earlier

  1. Make sure Logic is already installed on your computer. If not, please install Logic first and open Logic at least once, before running the installer for Nektar DAW integration software.
  2. Download the ‘Impact_GX_LX+_SE49_Apple_Support_OSX_1.1.9.dmg’ file from your Account page after registering your product. If you selected Logic as your DAW, you’ll find the link below your product registration.
  3. Run the 'Impact_Apple_Support' installer and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Plug-in your Impact keyboard and make sure it’s switched on (if you didn’t do so already).
  5. Launch Logic.
  6. Create a new Project or open an existing one.
  7. The Control Surface Setup window will appear to indicate that Logic has detected a new control surface. See image.

Troubleshooting with Logic 10.5 and earlier

If the controls/keys on your Impact iX, GX, LX, LX+, or SE25/49 are behaving unusually or simply not working try this fix.

  1. Close any applications you have open.
  2. Open a Finder window.
  3. Open the 'Go' menu at the top of the screen.
  4. Select 'Go to folder...'
  5. Type '~/Library/Preferences'
  6. Click 'Go'.
  7. Find com.apple.logic.pro.cs and move it to the trash (Important!)
  8. Start Logic again.

You should now be able to control Logic's mixer from Mixer Mode, and the instrument on the currently selected track in Instrument Mode.

If your Impact LX keyboard is detected in Logic but control surface functions are not working, check the USB Port Setup Mode:

  1. Press the 'Setup' button on your Impact keyboard (hold 'Shift/Mute' and 'Patch> (Setup)', if you have an LX+).
  2. Press the A2 key on the keyboard.
  3. The display should say '0.0.1.' if you are using an original Impact LX. It should say '0.0.2.' if you have an LX+.
  4. If the display says '0.0.0.', change it by pressing the C# key with '+' above it. If you are using an Impact LX25 or LX25+, you will need to press the C3 key (labeled 'Enter') before you can change this setting.

These instructions assume you have a compatible Reaper program installed running on either Windows (Vista or higher) or Mac OS X 10.7 or higher.

Installation

Make sure Reaper is already installed on your computer. If not, please install Reaper first and open it at least once, before running the installer for Nektar DAW integration software.

  • Download the 'Impact_Reaper_Integration' file from your Account page after registering your product.
  • Run the 'Impact_Reaper_Support' installer and follow the onscreen instructions.
  • Plug in your Impact controller and make sure it’s switched on (if you didn’t do so already).
  • Launch Reaper and open the 'Options' menu
  • Select 'Preferences'.
  • In the 'Preferences' window, select 'Control/OSC/Web'.
  • Click 'Add'.
  • In the pop-up window, select your Impact model in the 'Control surface mode' list. As long as your Impact is connected and switched on, Reaper should automatically detect the correct ports. (See Image 1 for OS X setup and Image 5 for Windows).
  • Click 'OK'.
  • In the 'Preferences' window, select 'MIDI Devices' from the Audio category.
  • Enable 'Impact LX**' (Windows) or 'Impact LX** MIDI1' (OS X) for your Impact. The mode should be 'Enable+Control'. The other 2 Impact ports should remain disabled. (See Image 2 for OS X setup and Image 6 for Windows).
  • Click 'Apply'.
  • Click 'OK'.

That's it, setup is now complete and you can move on to the fun part, learning how it all works!

Troubleshooting

It is important to only enable port 1 in the MIDI Devices window. If multiple ports are enabled Impact will not function correctly. Make sure your setup mirrors that of Image 2 and 6.

If you installed our Reaper support files before starting Reaper for the first time and find that your Impact controller is not listed in Reaper's Control Surfaces menu, please follow the steps below.

OSX:

  1. Open a Finder window.
  2. Open the 'Go' menu at the top of your screen.
  3. Select 'Go to folder'.
  4. Type or copy/paste '~/Library/Application Support'.
  5. Find the 'REAPER' folder in that directory and delete it.
  6. Start Reaper and then quit Reaper again.
  7. Run the Reaper support installer you downloaded from your Account page again.

Windows:

  1. Open a File Explorer window.
  2. Navigate to 'C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming' (note this is normally a hidden directory, follow the instructions on this page to unhide: Show hidden files).
  3. Find the 'REAPER' folder in that directory and delete it.
  4. Start Reaper and then quit Reaper again.
  5. Run the Reaper support installer you downloaded from your Account page again.

Patch Changes
If you find that the [< Patch] and [Patch >] buttons don't work when controlling a third-party plug-in, it's likely because the plug-in uses it's own patch browser. The Patch buttons on the Impact series control the patch navigation functions of the DAW, so you may need to save the plug-ins presets in your DAWs patch format, before you can use the Patch buttons on the Impact controller for patch navigation. You can find more information about saving patches in your DAW, in the documentation for that program.

Portable Installation

If you have a portable installation of Reaper, you will need to manually install the control surface files. The files you need can be found on the My Account tab on our website.

Download the file named 'Reaper_Portable_Installation_Impact'.

Unzip the file and copy/paste the .dll files to the 'Plugins' folder within Reaper's install path (usually C:\Program Files\REAPER (x64)).

Known Issues

Currently Nektar controllers will operate as generic MIDI devices when running Reaper, as native applications on M1 based Apple computers.

You can run these DAWs in an Intel Mac emulation layer called Rosetta and our support software for those applications will work. Please follow these steps:

  1. Open a Finder window.
  2. Select 'Applications' from the list on the left side of the window.
  3. Right-click on the Reaper app and select 'Get Info...'.
  4. Tick the 'Open in Rosetta' option.
  5. Close the Info window.
  6. Start the DAW.
